Context

Zone is a payment infrastructure company regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria and authorised to offer payment processing services — "the regulated blockchain network for frictionless payments", in its own words. Africa's leading banks, fintechs and regulators settle on it; its products include ZonePOS, ZoneATM and ZoneFT.

The network processes hundreds of millions of transactions for banks and fintechs. The Admin and Client Dashboards are how the regulator (the Central Bank of Nigeria), commercial banks and microfinance banks see and control what happens on that network: self-onboarding, real-time transaction tracking, settlement, dispute resolution and wallet management.

I joined in June 2022 and became the primary owner of the frontend. For nearly two years I was the sole frontend engineer, and I built more than 80% of every dashboard version that shipped.

Four kinds of people used them every day: operations teams at the banks, supervisors at the Central Bank checking compliance, the merchants and agents on the Client Dashboard, and Zone's own operations team on the Admin Dashboard. Each saw the same network through a different set of roles and permissions.

Constraints

  • Regulated. A central bank is a user. Compliance monitoring has to be real-time and trustworthy.
  • Multi-tenant across seven countries. One codebase, many institutions, different roles and permissions.
  • High throughput. The UI visualises and manages real-time, high-throughput payment flows.
  • Sole frontend engineer. Every architectural choice had to survive one person maintaining it.
  • Mixed deployment targets. Deployed across IIS and Linux environments via TeamCity pipelines and Helm charts.

Architecture

The cover above and the table below are rebuilds of the Client Dashboard with synthetic data; the product itself can't be shown. The table works: search it, filter by status, and sort by date or amount.

Outcomes

  • Sustained 99.9% availability for customer-facing systems.
  • Enabled real-time compliance monitoring for regulators, directly improving operational trust.
  • Successfully onboarded multiple clients; the platform is actively expanding based on user feedback and feature evolution.
  • Featured in Zone's African Builder series as one of the company's MVPs.
